This Monday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its 928 new members, including ten Chileans (six women and four men).
In the select group the actresses Paulina García (“Gloria”) and Daniela Vega (“A fantastic woman”) were invited; the director and screenwriter Maite Alberdi (“La once”); to the cinematographer Benjamín Echazarreta (“A fantastic woman”); director Alicia Scherson (“Rara”); the editors Soledad Salfate (“A Fantastic Woman”) and Andrea Chignoli (“The Bride of the Desert”); actor Pedro Pascal (“Narcos”); and the scriptwriters Gonzalo Maza (“Gloria”) and Guillermo Calderón (“El Club”). The 928 new members come from 59 different countries, and far exceed the number of incomes established in 2017: 774 people. Among the percentages highlighted on the website of the Hollywood Film Academy, is that 49% of the invited members are women, thus reaching 31% of the total members of the prestigious organization. By 2020, the entity hopes to achieve parity between men and women. In addition, and as a way of responding to the criticism they have received in recent years, it was highlighted that 38% of the new members are “people of color.” In previous years, they had already been considered outstanding exponents of national art and cinema such as Sebastián Lelio (“Gloria”), Gabriel Osorio and Patricio Escala (“Story of a bear”), the director of photography Sergio Armstrong (“No”) , the producer Juan de Dios Larraín (“A fantastic woman”) and the writer Alejandro Jodorowsky, among others.
